Old Wives' Tales Description
Kids aside, this is one of Portland's most popular restaurants. The food's excellent, the atmosphere's casual, and what's not to like about their signature dish of Hungarian mushroom soup? Old Wives' Tales is a kid hot spot primarily because of their playhouse painted like a circus train that has nooks to climb in and places to hide (fun!). They'll devour the food, though, too.
Planning Notes
- Good for food sensitivities. Food allergies, gluten and lactose intolerances, and vegan and low-carb diets are all easily accommodated.
- Order the local favorites. Consider one of the dishes Old Wives' Tales is best known for: Hungarian mushroom soup, healthy salad bar, Moroccan oatmeal, East Indian tofu rancheros, or pumpkin pudding (made with silken tofu; get it warm and topped with whipped cream).
- Know the rules. Warn your kids ahead of time about two key playroom rules: 1. Shoes stay on. 2. No screaming!
- Side dishes make good kid meals. Families may wish to choose children's choices from the Small Plates and Side Orders offerings, like plain fusilli, slices of cheese, and cottage cheese.

Reviews of Old Wives' Tales
Kid friend friendly and parent friendly

What we loved:
The kiddos loved the playroom and the food is yummy. I loved the soup.
What we didn't love:
The streets are one way and the parking lot is on a side street.
A family friend recommended this place a few years ago and weve been going here ever since. The kiddos love the playroom and I love being able to eat real food while they play. I always get the Hungarian Mushroom soup with the salad bar and the hubs usually gets the Japanese veggie pancake or something from the specials. We get the pumpkin pudding for dessert. It has tofu in it and the kids love it. Dont tell them it has tofu in it! Haha. Youd never know, its delish. Its a really low key place and feels homey. We took our relatives from out of town there recently because our nephew has a wheat allergy and this place has lots of food with no gluten for him and it made dinner so easy and without stress.
