The Doughnut Plant Description

As you walk around the Lower East Side the aroma of Chinese food will fade allowing the scent of freshly made donuts to waft through. Follow that scent to the Doughnut Plant. If you can't figure it out by smell, just look for the donut starved masses waiting on line outside the tiny bakery on Grand Street. You can't miss it. These donuts are, simply put, amazing. The flavors are sophisticated, yet homey. Their trademarked square jelly or cream filled donuts give you the best of both donut worlds -- a filled donut that still has the center hole. Kids will go crazy for the square shaped peanut butter and jelly donut, a yeast donut with strawberry jelly filling and peanut butter glaze outside. Adults can try crème brulee, tres leches or any of the other fantastic donuts on offer. Be sure to check out our other Lower East Side & Chinatown vacation ideas.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Kids can watch the donut makers in action in the back kitchen.

Planning Notes

  • Plan ahead. Get there early the donuts are made fresh each day and sell out fast! Usually by 6 p.m. they are all gone. There is always a line but stick it out since it moves fast and the donuts are worth the wait. There are only one or two window seats so get your donuts to go.
  • A second location. In 2010 the Doughnut Plant will be opening another Manhattan shop. It will be located on West 23rd Street in the famous Chelsea Hotel.
