La Palapa Description
Romantic is the word everyone uses for La Palapa, a classic Puerto Vallarta dining experience that's lured celebrities and loungers since the 1950s. But it's also just plain fun. Choose to sit in the three-sided open-air dining room or on the sand itself; either way you're just steps from the boardwalk promenade that runs the length of Playa de los Muertos, one of Puerto Vallarta's most beautiful beaches. A jazz ensemble entertains on weekend nights, and they're good; musically inclined kids will be riveted. The seafood is off-the-boat fresh; ceviche, grilled fish, and seafood pasta dishes are all outstanding. The kids' menu has several choices, and there are kid-friendly choices like quesadillas on the main menu as well.
Planning Notes
- Reservations needed. La Palapa is a "must-do" desttination restaurant for many visitors, so make a reservation via opentable.com during peak season. And I'd vote strongly for a table on the sand, particularly if you have restive kids; they can go play while the food's prepared, leaving you free to enjoy a leisurely cocktail. The opposite would be true with toddlers, though; don't sit too close to the beach or you'll be chasing junior away from the ocean all night instead of enjoying your food.
