Romy's Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp Description

Traveling down the North Shore along the Kamehameha Highway you'll spot numerous shrimp trucks and shave-ice stops that look like they've been painted by circus clowns. Romy's Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp, housed in a bright-red building (not a truck), sits among them and offers up shrimp they've raised and cooked themselves. Let the kids dive in hands first as they learn how to peel the succulent shrimp.

Planning Notes

Clean up. Make sure to grab plenty of napkins; these snacks are messy!

Take it easy. At Romy's, you'll spot a small sign in the window that says, "This is not fast food; it is good food, as fast as we can make it." Remember that things are laid back in Hawaii. Being in a hurry will only frustrate you and your servers.

Also try Giovanni's. A great choice if Romy's is just too swamped, these folks have been dishing their hot and spicy shrimp for 15 years.

Get shave ice afterwards. Hawaii's version of a snow cone is sold at Matsumoto's Shave Ice or Aoki's Shave Ice, both in Haleiwa. Ask for ice cream on the bottom.

Ive been home from vacation for about a week and a half, and all I can think about is ROMYS shrimp. We vacationed all parts of Oahu and Maui, but in the 2 weeks we were in Hawaii nothing compared to the shrimp and fish we ate on North Shore. Ive worked in the restaurant business for 20 years& So my palate is designed to recognize quality, freshness, and a great recipe& and I will say I found that all with just one shrimp stand, being inquisitive as I am, I found that the freshness comes from Romy being the only farmer on the island; their entire product served was harvested that day&. You can taste this in every bite! My family all ordered different plates and we all shared with one another& when we went back the next day, the line was longer& because obviously everyone on the island knows the best place to eat!!
