Wishing Well Shave Ice Description
The generous portions of shaved ice, a staple of any Kauai diet and a must-try on the island, are served out of a truck at this much-loved stand in Hanalei. On a hot day in Kauai there's nothing better than the Artic cold blast from shaved ice, which is shaved from an ice block, packed high in a cup (often over ice cream), and flavored with anything you fancy — from mango syrup to passionfruit.
Planning Notes
- There are dozens of shaved ice places on Kauai. The ones that cater to tourists tend to be more expensive (expect to pay $6 for one) than the ones that mostly serve locals (where the price is more like $3). Other great shaved ice vendors include Jo Jo's Shaved Ice in Waimea and Hawaiian Blizzard in Kapaa.
- Don't expect service with a smile. The folks who run this place are notoriously grumpy but the gorgeous backdrop of Hanalei (you sit at picnic benches) and the sweetness of the shaved ice make up for it.
- Try something new. Shaved ice novelties include syrup made from li hung mu, a salty-sweet Chinese dried plum, and a topping of condensed milk and azuki beans, a favorite in Japan.
Just the Facts
Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from noon - 5 p.m., though since this is a mom-and-pop truck, these hours can vary. Also note that they are closed in bad weather.
