Luaus at the Smith Family Gardens Description

There are lots of luaus for families to choose from on Kauai and the Smith family's is one of the most fun and festive. This Hawaiian style feast is an experience like no other — even if you are getting the tourist version of it — and you can't say you went to Hawaii and didn't attend a luau. It starts with a narrated tram ride through the botanical gardens (or you can walk), then your family receives shell leis and gets photos taken (available for purchase later), and then you enjoy a real feast, which includes a ceremony to unearth the roasted kalua pig, Hawaiian and American delicacies, and an after dinner show of spectacular live performances with fire eaters, hula dancers, and more.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Though the crowds and the late night are not so good for preschoolers, there are peacocks in the gardens, amazing costumes, and lots of kid-friendly food for the youngest set.

Pre-Teens & Teens: The strong drinks are only for people 21 and older (they check ID) but you can order all-you-can-drink virgin pina coladas and mai tais, which teenagers really enjoy.

Planning Notes

  • Expect a late night. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. and do not end until after sunset. With driving times, you'll be in for a late night.
  • Other good luaus on Kauai. Family travelers also recommend the Sheraton Luau and the luau at Kilohana Plantation.
  • Buy discounted tickets. You can save a lot of money if you buy tickets in person at the Koloa Activity Center.

Just the Facts

Hours: Luaus begin at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the summer, three times a week during the winter. If you do not wish to attend the dinner but would like to see the show, gates open at 7:30 p.m. for "show only" ticket holders. The schedule begins 15 minutes earlier during the months of November through February.

Fees: More than $40.
