Kauai Chocolate Company Description
A locally owned mom and pop chocolate shop where everything is handmade. In this small store you can watch the chocolatiers as they work and see their supplies, including 10-pound chocolate bars, an ice cream machine, and the stainless steel table where the assembling is done. The most popular chocolate in the store is the chocolate opihi (an "opihi" is a kind of mollusk that sticks to the ocean rocks), which is a little lumpy thing made with a shortbreak cookie, caramel, and roasted macademia nuts. They also have other novelty items like chocolate Japanese bento boxes with Rice Krispy "sushi."
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Will love the chocolate-covered marshmallows on a stick with or without colorful sprinkles.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids who like turtles will gobble up the .65 cent solid chocolate turtles.
Planning Notes
- Try "The Brick." A giant gooey candy bar made in baking sheet pans, "The Brick" has layers of toffee and macademia nuts, caramel, and chocolate. There are 10 different varieties, including mango, Kahlua, and peanut butter.
- Don't miss the ice cream. Handmade on the premises, it's the best you'll find on the island! On Wednesday you can see them making it. Especially noteworthy is the Niumalu Vanilla (Niumalu is where the vanilla is grown), which has an intense vanilla flavor unlike anything you've ever tasted.
- Talk to Donald. When co-owner Donald Greer is in the shop, he's happy to stop and talk. Friendly and full of information about the island, he'll give you the inside scoop on all things Kauai.
