St.-Viateur Bagel Shop Description
Rue Saint-Viateur is where you'll find dozens of ethnicities—Jews, Greeks, Russians, Italians, Africans—living in a thriving community. The street is also home to the St.-Viateur Bagel Shop, where kids love watching sweating workers shape bagels from the hugest mound of yeasted dough you've ever seen, transfer them to a boiling pot, and cook them in a wood-fired brick oven (one secret to the unique flavor of Montreal bagels). Kids love eating them, too. Yum!
Planning Notes
- Jewish shops are closed on Saturdays for the Sabbath. The bagel shop (now owned by an Italian family) is open, however, and is always bustling.
- Easy parking. It's not hard to find parking in this delightful neighborhood (remember to buy your ticket and put it in the window), but it is best explored on foot.
- Stay a while. Meander through the neighborhood, where you can enjoy face time, steamed milk, and treats from the terrace of one of the dozens of cafés in the area, then take in a book at the Mile End Library, or play on the swings at the Saint-Viateur Park.
