Small town 4th of July

by azjaems March 19, 2008

Here is everyone getting lined up to walk in the parade!

For July 4th, 2007 our family visited my aunt and her family in Kanab, Utah. It's a small town on the southern border not far from the Grand Canyon. We spent a week there visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce National Park and Zion National Park. Beautiful parts of the Southwest. The best part was the small town feeling. Everywhere we went in town people knew my aunt and uncle and treated us like family. There are several small antique stores that have some of the best finds I have ever seen (and at fair prices!). For the Independence Day celebration the town held a parade in the morning. Our family was part of the parade, my cousin's first born has hydrocephalus and we ran a lemonade stand to help raise money for awareness (the town helped us raise over $1000). Later in the day there was a small fair at the park down the street from my aunt's house and a barbecue right before the fireworks. The park has a water play area and in the warmth of the day we all played in the water (12 grandkids, including my girlfriend). We watched the fireworks and played with some until the wee hours of the night.

It was relaxing and comforting to spend the vacation in the type of town that has defined what it means to be family. We have decided that this might become our tradition and go back often.
