College Trip - Elon University
by woodwilco March 31, 2008
One of Elon's multiple walkways between buildings.
The most memorable vacation my family has taken in a while was our trip to Elon University in Elon, North Carolina last fall. My daughter Michelle is a high school senior, and this year we learned that there are over 4,000 colleges in the United States alone, a daunting thought for everyone involved in the application process.
At the beginning of the year, Michelle had her heart set on attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the school that my husband Leigh and I attended for undergraduate and law school. Once we compared out-of-state admission statistics from the year Leigh and I applied to Carolina and this year, we realized that Chapel Hill was a serious reach school for almost all out-of-state applicants. Once Michelle had gotten used to the idea of looking elsewhere, she stumbled upon Elon University and was intrigued by the campusâ¬" size and beauty.
When we visited Elon for the first time last fall, our entire family immediately fell in love with the school. Our tour included a visit through Elonâ¬"s residence halls (something that the other schools we had visited didnâ¬"t offer in as much depth), multiple cafeterias, and communications and journalism building (currently Michelle is interested in majoring in journalism or English). Later when Michelle went back to Elon to interview for a Journalism and Communications fellowship, she learned even more about the multitude of opportunities offered to students at Elon that might not be available at larger institutions. From its ivy-covered brick buildings to its incredibly strong journalism programs, everything about Elon seemed to be a perfect fit for Michelle. Before she had heard back from UNC, Michelle knew that Elon was the right college for her.
On January 29th, Michelle received the great news that she had been accepted to Elon and awarded the schoolâ¬"s Presidential Scholarship. Two months later, Michelle was named an Elon Journalism and Communications Fellow, an honor given to only 25 incoming freshmen each year. Michelle recently paid her enrollment deposit to Elon and is looking forward to joining the class of 2012 this August. We are all extremely curious and excited about the road ahead.
