How Many Aunties Do You Have?
by HenryJMommy August 29, 2009 | Son: Age 2
My husband grew up the 1st 6 years of life in HI and then as an adult did 2 tours in HI. He has a HI SSN so he considers himself "Hawaiian." So for his 40th birthday, I surprised him with a trip to WDW (his other favorite place on Earth) and stayed at the Polynesian. To my chagrin, when we first checked in all the castmates we encountered were "haulis" or to my non-Hawaiian awareness non-Hawaiians.
Finally by the 3rd day, we had dinner at O'Hana. We were seated right where the entertainment takes place. My DH lights up and sighs "finally." He took my son and next thing I know his "Auntie" is hanging out at our table. Takes our DS (2 year old) around with her as she continued to entertain. The next day, another Auntie, tipped off by the other Auntie, gave my husband the most beautiful, fresh flower lei for his birthday. And as the trip goes on, we are greeted, picked out as family the rest of the stay. My DS started callign all the ladies "Auntie" and the finishing touch was when another vacationeer asked "How many Aunties does your son have?"
I can't thank the Hawaiian family at the Polynesian enough for making my husband's 40th birthday the most "family" birthday ever!
