Rocky Mountain Winter Wonderland

Enjoying a Winter Wonderland

We have all had times in our lives when we have high expectations of seeing or doing something and then once it actually happens we must admit that are expectations were not exactly met. A trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in June of 2003 proved be beyond my own expectations.
We were spending the night in a rustic cabin just outside the park. We spent the evening relaxing and realizing that the temperature was dropping. It was already much colder than any of us had expected it to be and it didnâ¬"t look like it would be getting anything but colder. As we went to bed in our un-heated cabin we all wrapped up as much as possible. In order to help keep warm our children who were so excited about the bunk beds both got in the top bunk together. They then spent the next couple of hours fighting over the few blankets that we had packed. Somehow the night ended with me in the small bunk bed with the my wallowing son. I not only froze but I had a little boy rolling all over me all night. Needless to say none of us got much sleep that night. However this sleepless night forced us to get up very early in order to get dressed, packed and into the van with the heater. This course of action proved to be a true blessing.
Once we left the campground and began to warm up it was just a few minutes before we were at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. It isnâ¬"t long until we begin to truly see how fortunate we are for our early morning start. The place is covered in freshly fallen snow. This is the epitome of a mountain winter wonderland. It is one of those scenes that you would see in a film or on a postcard and think to yourself, â¬SIs there such a place that really looks like that?â¬ý For me it is a place that is so ingrained in my mind that I can go back there and see, hear, smell, and feel every aspect by simply closing my eyes. It was an amazingly beautiful winter wonderland.
