Wide Eyes: My Favorite Vacation Moment

by this_irish_rose March 26, 2008 | Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Wide Eyes: moving, amusing, and oh so wonderful!

My husband grew up deprived of nature. I grew up deprived of theme-parks. So weâ¬"ve made an agreement to visit each otherâ¬"s wonders. Our first trip together was last year. We visited Yosemite Valley, and never have I had a more memorable experience in the park. We saw everything ⬠the meadows, the waterfalls, and the granite mammoths. Basically, I took him to all the great and beautiful highlights on the map. He took these wonders in with a childlike enthusiasm. But in all the moments that occurred on this trip, and in all the beauty around us, my favorite moment I found in an unexpected place.
We were walking a bike trail, away from any great tourist attraction, when he caught site of something that made him race off toward some picnic tables. What? Well it was a tree that had been struck by lightning, something I thought so ordinary, but was a wild wonder in his wide eyes. His reaction to this simple thing was my highlight moment.
This year is our first theme-park trip where he will be the expert. We now have a daughter, and I know nothing will make him happier than seeing our wide eyes.
