Family Road Trippin': The Best of New England
There's something about summers in New England — the entire season feels like one big, laid-back celebration, where everyone is welcome and the lobster rolls and ice cream cones keep on comin'. If you're a local in any one of New England's six compact states — Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts —you're in luck, because you're close to an endless array of activities to feed every interest, from thrill-seeking to beachcombing. Here are some of our favorite warm-weather experiences:
#1: Freedom Trail, Boston, MA
Put on your walking shoes and follow the 2.5-mile red brick trail that winds through some of Boston's most treasure-filled streets and neighborhoods. Most of the 16 historical sites you'll discover along the way won't cost a cent to see, like the gorgeous Boston Common, home to the famed Swan Boats; the original Fanueil Hall; and the site of the Boston Massacre. A nominal fee will let you get acquainted with the battleship known as "Old Ironsides" and tour the former home of Paul Revere, who took his famous Midnight Ride from here in 1775.
