Nashville at Christmas

It's all about the shows in Music City, where you'll find dozens of Christmas performances to choose from and some of the friendliest holiday folks around. Stroll downtown or take a carriage ride to the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the State Capitol, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (known to all as "Tee-PAC"), bustling Broadway, and Bicentennial State Park. Everywhere you go you'll feel welcomed and Christmasy and, though the weather's mild, there's just enough nip in the air to make you feel cozy when you go inside.

Don't miss:

  • Gaylord Opryland Resort
    www.gaylordhotels.com

The Gaylord Opryland Resort has been offering A Country Christmas for the past 25 years, which is a paradise for children of amazing Christmas music shows (from the Rockettes to Dr. Seuss musicals), decorated tree displays, craft projects, carriage rides, and more!

  • Nashville Ballet's The Nutcracker at Tennessee Performing Arts Center
    505 Deaderick Street
    Nashville, TN 37219
    615-782-4000 (information)
    615-255-2787 (ticketing)
    www.tpac.org/index.asp

TPAC is home to four theaters — from a small black box that seats 250 to a main stage where thousands can enjoy a show -- and offers an amazing variety of programming, including touring Broadway shows, Disney shows, and lots of other family-friendly spectacles. Walk into an inviting lobby where there's something to look at everywhere (a water wall and fountain, art and quotes embedded in the shades of blue floor, and performance-specific atmosphere). At Christmastime the lights go on for the Nashville Ballet, which is performing a fascinating version of the Nutcracker based on Tennessee history.

  • Belle Meade Plantation
    5025 Harding Pike 37205
Christmas themed tour runs November 6-December 31, 2009
    800-270-3991
    www.bellemeadeplantation.com

There's lots going on this holiday season at the Belle Meade Plantation at the 30-acre historic museum and house, which was built in 1853 and used to house the horses that raced in the Kentucky Derby. The Victorian Christmas exhibit includes hands-on parlor games, magicians, fortunetellers, and more. Eight outbuildings, acres of lawn to run around on, a huge gift shop, and a restaurant with a seasonal menu that serves up scrumptious seasonal fare like fudge pie with peppermint ice cream (featured on Martha Stewart!) complete a day of holiday family fun here. Tours recommended for children five years old and up.

Christmastime at Disney World is a must at least once in your life! We prefer to go early in December before it gets too busy. Disney does everything right, especially at Christmas! From the decorations to the shows and the snow piped in on Main Street it's an experience that cannot be beat. We are going to Chicago the week between Christmas and New Year's and can't wait!
