#10 of 10:  White Mountains, New Hampshire

White Mountains at Christmas

New Englanders are a lucky bunch at Christmastime when quaint towns from Rhode Island to Maine become the very picture of the traditional holiday setting of lore. The White Mountains area of New Hampshire offers a gorgeous, woodsy scene with plenty of family fare and adventure any time of year, but during the holiday season you'll swear you're part of a picture book, or a wintery dream.

The topper, though, for families with young children at this time of year is Jefferson, New Hampshire's 60-year old classic theme park, Santa's Village. Older kids may yawn at its tame rides, but those 13 and under will delight in the all-Christmas, all-the-time experience and adults will love the charming theming. Take your teens to Mount Washington or skiing at Cannon Mountain, where holiday decor and good old-fashioned fun will put everyone in a festive mood.

Don't miss:

  • Santa's Village
It's Christmas all year at Santa's Village, where every child gets a chance to whisper his wishes to Santa Claus and greet Mrs. Claus too amid festive activities, events, and rides with names like the Skyway Sleigh Monorail, the Great Humbug Adventure, SS Peppermint Twist, and Santa's Smackers Bumper Cars. Kids, especially younger ones, will delight in this magical land that's just their speed while parents will enjoy a beautiful, low-key, well-maintained park that's rarely packed to the gills. Most rides are fine for any child over the age of 2; parents can take even younger tykes on several. Stay until after dark to enjoy a cup of cocoa under a dazzling display of glittering lights. The park is open from Memorial Day through the week of Christmas, but weekends only starting in the fall, so check the website for scheduling information.

Christmastime at Disney World is a must at least once in your life! We prefer to go early in December before it gets too busy. Disney does everything right, especially at Christmas! From the decorations to the shows and the snow piped in on Main Street it's an experience that cannot be beat. We are going to Chicago the week between Christmas and New Year's and can't wait!
