Conversation Starters

Time on the road offers families the perfect opportunity to reconnect by having conversations that don't revolve around car pools, chores, or eating all your vegetables. If you have trouble switching conversational gears, try asking your kids these questions or similar variations. You can give them the wheel sometimes, too, letting them ask you probing queries! Or you can turn this less-than-idle chat into a game by writing questions on slips of paper, placing them in a hat, and passing the hat — the question you pick out is the one you must answer, honestly. Make your queries silly or serious, but be sure they cannot be answered by just saying yes or no.

  • If you could make up a holiday, what would it be and how would you celebrate it?

  • What is the first thing you would do if you became president?

  • Would you rather be a butterfly or a fish? Why?

  • Do you think dogs are smarter than cats? Are dogs smarter than horses?

  • What did settlers on the prairie have for breakfast 100 years ago? What will we be eating for breakfast in 100 years?

  • If you had to lose one of your five senses, which would it be? Which one sense would you choose if you could only have one? Why?

  • Would you like to have sonar like a bat, or be able to run as fast as a gazelle? Why?

  • If you could choose five animal qualities for yourself from the animal kingdom, what would they be?

  • What is the best book you've read recently, and why did you like it?

  • What's the silliest thing you ever did?

  • What will you do this summer?

  • What's your earliest memory?

  • What do you think the surface of the moon looks like?

  • If you were going to write a book, what would it be about?

  • What will you be doing in ten years?

  • If you discovered a new island what do you imagine would be on it?

  • What one thing would you change about school?

  • Who is your hero and why?

  • What should we surprise Mom with for her birthday this year?

  • What is the best — and the worst — thing you have ever eaten?

  • What is an item of international news that you have heard or read about in the past few months?
