All-Purpose Birthday Gifts Under $20

I love the art supplies idea. They've got tons of tools and markers at craft supply stores that go well with an oversized pad of paper and a colorful container. Kids also go crazy for stickers. I often include some when I send cards to nieces and nephews.

I'm with EmilyArms. I love to buy kids floor puzzles, the kind with those giant pieces. You can get really nice ones for about 10 bucks.

becarful of holding onto gift that may become outdated. With electronics changing formats all the time I have been left holding onto gameboy advance games when the gameboy ds came out and that was the game system of choice

I've found that if I stock up at the "back-to-school" sales I can get crayons, markers, glue, notepads, safety scissors and maybe a small backpack or a cool pencil box to store it all in for under $10 and the kids LOVE these gifts!

I'm a fan of giving kids CDs recorded by hip rock/pop artists, and these are becoming more popular and easy-to-find. My friends with kids have remarked that their kids love the music, but they can also enjoy it without going crazy from those repetitive, often annoying songs by a big purple dinosaur or other mascot!

I think that both kids and parents these days tend to get overwhelmed with birthday presents -- there are too many, they're too big and they cost too much. I stock up on books and crafts, and I'm adding the suggestions above to my list -- they sound great!

I would normally buy toys or items that are of good value when they are on sale, especially after Christmas and stash them away as future gifts.

Under $20.00? You've got to be kidding! I RARELY spend over $10.00 on kids' birthday presents. I find my local drugstore has a great supply on inexpensive gifts. Sometimes they even offer a 2 for the price of one.
