Many high school graduates receive traditional gifts like watches, cash or cars (or all of the above, depending on their ZIP code). In order to help you dodge the predicability bullet, we've come up with five gift suggestions for your favorite mortar-boarder that range from affordable to pricy:

  • A New Laptop Computer: Find out what features your graduate needs and wants in a computer. Personal tastes vary and are important to keep in mind, but the good news is that there is a vast array of options and prices from which to choose. Check out the Sunday circulars for the best deals on laptops from the consumer electronics stores. Dell and Toshiba are good bets for inexpensive laptops.
  • Computer Backpack: As you're shopping for that laptop computer, why not grab a backpack for your college student to carry it in? Better yet, tell a relative to buy one to go along with your computer gift. Most computer stores sell them. Targus makes a sturdy version with lots of pockets and compartments.
  • His or Her Own Domain Name: If your graduate hasn't already secured his or her own piece of Web real estate, then this is a perfect gift that will come in handy now or later, since more and more people are using their name as a URL to market themselves or their businesses. Add on Web hosting if you can afford it.
  • Digital Camera:
  • These come in a wide range of prices and will surely get a lot of use. There's a wide selection of makes and models to choose from, but three popular brands are:
  • Start an IRA:
  • It's never too early to start saving for retirement. Set one up for your graduate and let the saving begin.

Sending them off might be difficult, but you can feel better knowing you're giving them something practical and fun.
