Family 5: Our Favorite Spring Cleaning Products
Spring cleaning -- it's just not one of those warm fuzzy phrases.
But we could all probably benefit from giving our homes the once over with warmer weather coming. Just think -- as the temperature rises, you can fling open windows, turn down the thermostat and use the screen door. In preparation for the season, spring cleaning has become somewhat of an annual ritual for most.
Spring cleaning can be manageable, says HGTV designer Heidi Karpa. "Head into the kitchen and focus on all those nooks and crannies that somehow always get out of control over the course of a winter," she says. Don't forget -- that includes the refrigerator!
Here are five must-have products that will get your spring cleaning session off to a stellar start:
- Kitchen organizer. The space underneath the sink can be a clutter culprit. Go for the "Duck Products: Stack It Shelf" to help organize your cleaning supplies, sponges and soap dispensers. Or check out the 2-drawer kitchen-and-bath organizer from the Container Store.
- Baking soda. Yes, this is a deceptively simple item but a vital one for a stem-to-stern house scrubbing. Dissolve some in water to clean the inside of your fridge.
- Spice rack. Spices can take up a lot of space in the kitchen. One of the best ways to free up more room in there is to find just the right spice rack for you. Look online or in a kitchen product store. Spice racks come in all shapes and sizes. Some of the most contemporary looks out there are available at Tubular Spices; also check Cooking.com for more traditional, wood, wall-mounted versions, or William Sonoma for a countertop, brushed steel model.
- Clear storage boxes. The Container Store boasts a wide selection of storage boxes. Check online for the size that fits your needs. You can use them for shoes, coats and sweaters. Store them under a bed or in the closet. They're a must have for a spring cleaning session. >
- Sturdy step ladders. The garage is usually one of the household zones most in need of a nip/tuck at springtime especially since you'll use it more during the summer to store gardening tools and sporting equipment. You'll be glad then to have a sturdy step ladder to reach those high shelves in the garage or above the refrigerator in the kitchen. Try Bed Bath and Beyond or your local hardware store and be sure to choose a quality model.
