From the Disney Family Editors: You don't need to have a movie star's salary to look absolutely fabulous. Be the hippest mom on the block with these tips from our fashion expert.

Here are a few tips from fashion expert Amy Lindquist on how to kick a wardrobe up a notch without denting your wallet too deeply.

  1. Tops on the list are cargo pants. Here's why -- it's tough to find a great pair of jeans that fit just perfectly anyway. So forget the hunt and go for cargo pants. You'll leave Target or Old Navy with a nice pair and only $20 or so less in your pocket. Dress them up with heels or down with flip flops.

  2. Nothing delivers return on fashion investment like a good handbag because you'll use it every day. "Your cost per use/wear ends up being pennies," Lindquist says. The in bag right now is a doctor bag. You can find a great selection at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and even Overstock. But, Lindquist warns, only buy it if you love it. If you don't, it'll end up in that section of your closet where bad purchases go to die.

  3. Belts are a simple way to add a fresh touch to any outfit, from a formal coat to a button-down shirt. But here's the trick: "find a soft, squishy variety -- no stiff or rigid leather. Rigid belts will produce fat rolls on the top and bottom of the belt," Lindquist advises. Check out H&M and Target for wide selections and prices ranging from $18 to $40. And PS, your best bets will be black and brown.

  4. Coats make a powerful first impression, Lindquist says. Look for one to match your hair or your eyes and check out the options at Gap, Old Navy, and J. Crew. As with handbags, don't buy it unless you love it.

  5. Last, but not least, any mom's wardrobe could use the classic white shirt. Go for a button-down that you can wear with dark jeans, nice slacks or skirts. Shirts with a touch of Lycra give some structure. Take a look at Limited and Express where you'll shell out only $30 to $50 for this staple of style.

Don't forget fantastic shoes! Try a comfortable, colorful pair of wedge sandals or a versatile pair of beautiful boots you can wear anywhere. You can dress up just about any outfit quickly and you'll probably find whatever you pay will be worth every penny. DSW Shoe Warehouse has great deals, and Amazon's new site, Endless.com, is fun to browse as well.
