Nina Garcia's Six Sophisticated Staples No Woman Should Live Without
Want to look sensational year after year? You don't have to spend wildly, you just have to spend smart. Nina Garcia - Project Runway judge and author of The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own – shares her six fashion essentials no mom should live without.
1. A Good Coat
This is one of the best investments you can make. It's often the first thing people see you in, especially in the fall or winter. So splurge on it! "You may have a fantastic outfit, but if you're wearing a bad coat, honey, you're dead on arrival!"
2. A Good Bag
This accessory can pull your look together very easily. "And for moms, it has to be a shoulder bag. Totes are great. Messenger bags are great, too. J. Crew and Anne Taylor Loft both have great bags." Not a big believer in diaper bags, Garcia says messenger bags and totes can do double duty. "You can fit a lot in there and look chic!"
It's easy to move about in leggings and they're a perfect layering piece. "You can play around with your kid and you don't have to worry that you're being exposed."
4. A Great Pair of Shoes
"For mom, I think it really has to be a good pair of flats. I was a super proponent of high heels until I had a baby, and then I was like, 'I can't do this. I can't run after him in high heels!'" Not a fan of flats? Try a great, comfortable wedge.
Often overlooked, a great lipstick adds a flash of color as you're dashing out the door. "It's an inexpensive and fast pick-me-up."
6. A Button-Down Shirt
Garcia doesn't believe in tailored shirts. "I think it makes me look fatter. I think a man's shirt that is sort of loose-fitting is more chic and more flattering than a fitted shirt. It hides the flaws."
