Nina Garcia's 5 Quick Fashion Fixes for Moms
How do you stay stylish when the kids have you on the run 24/7? We asked fashion guru and author Nina Garcia, a mom who knows how to put it all together even with a toddler in tow. The judge on Lifetime's Project Runway, who is also mom to son Lucas, 3, shares her five quick fashion fixes for moms on the go.
1. A Colorful Scarf
This simple staple goes a long way in complementing any outfit. Plus, by keeping the focus on your face, it also has a slimming effect. "When you don't have a lot of time to accessorize, a scarf is perfect. You can't wear a dangly necklace when you're running around with kids."
2. A Pair of Cute Flats
The rest of your look might be basic, but you want the accessories you do wear to make a statement. "As moms, we're running around a lot, so cute flats are a must." Garcia's fave picks include leopard-print or jeweled ballet flats, moccasins, beautiful sandals, or great flat boots.
3. A Long Cardigan
Need something stylish to throw on as you head out the door? Try a sweater with pockets big enough to accommodate pacifiers, cars, tiny dolls or anything else that get pressed into your palm by sticky little hands. "What you're wearing underneath can be basic, but look for one that's jeweled around the neckline, something that shows your feminine side."
4. A Printed Dress
"The printed dress camouflages a lot of things," says Garcia. "Things like…throw up!" Celeb moms like Nicole Richie, Heidi Klum, Halle Berry, and Angelina Jolie know this secret and are often seen wearing this no-stress time-saver. "When you're doing separates, you have to think about all the pieces. This is one-stop shopping. Put on the dress and you're done!"
5. Big, Bold Shades
For instant cool, go for the sunglasses. The bigger, the better. "If you haven't had a lot of sleep, or aren't wearing any make-up, they're great."
