Description

We recently moved to an apartment. I baby sit during the day. When we arent playing make believe, we watch some Disney movies, mostly on VHS. I thought we would have to get rid of them after our move, but that changed. Now we have a house/building/storage facility. Basically, I took a few boxes, primarily food containers, and constructed a new play center. We will paint and add onto it later. I drew some bricks on construction paper, and slapped them onto the building. I didnt paste much so we would have the option of changing things at a later time. All I really had to do was cut some boxes and decorate. There's a platform at the bottom of the picture. You can leave it like that and increase the height of other buildings. Or, you can flip it over, and it becomes a store.

Materials

Mostly boxes; food and one large cardboard box. Construction paper. Scissors. Markers. Index Cards (for stair & bed). Paint. Toilet rolls. Little meat trays. Candy wrappers (bedspread).

How to Make

  • Take the large box and decorate it as you wish. You can store movies in it, or use it for play all the time. You will need a smaller box and cardboard for that. You can cut the smaller box as you desire and place inside the larger on. To make it more interesting add stairs. For the stairs you will need paper. Try to fold as evenly as possible. Then paste however you see fit. The buildings in the background are constructed the same way.

  • The wide houses can be simply decoration or for play. If you want them just for decoration you have to take one side and form the tabs into a triangle, unless you want a flat roof. Measure for best results, then past the construction paper on top to form roof. The smaller house goes by about the same procedure.

  • You will need a narrower box, unless you want it to be taller. Either way, you cut the top sides of the box to open it up. Decorate as you wish. Its better to start with the walls. Then add stairs, if want to. To make a bed you will need to fold the index card sides in a rectangular shape so it sets up. This process can be used to make other furniture as well. You can take a candy wrapper, or just paint, to make a bedspread. The pool and rug are made by drawing on a cardboard surface and placing it where you desire to. Lastly, decorate your toilet rolls to make columns. They come in handy along with the meat trays, or just cardboard, to make levels in the first building

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your gingerbread house or holiday cookie is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
