Newspaper wall art

Description

My daughters and I made this to decorate their playroom. We crumpled used old newspapers and taped them with masking tape onto an old poster board from one of my eldest's school projects. The poster board was cut into the shape of a flower.
We created a flour and water mixture and placed smooth pieces of newspaper on top of the puffy newspaper. The girls had fun getting gooey doing. We let it dry. I went back and smoothed out some of the bumps myself. We picked old paint from our craft stash and painted the flower. With left over spray-on varnish from other projects, we sealed it. It's now on the wall as pop art. So simple. The cost...just $4 for masking tape and flour. We plan on making more.

Materials

Old newspapers or magazines.
Poster board or foam board.
Masking tape.
A couple cups of flour mixed with water until it's the consistency of tomato soup.
Acrylic paint.
Spray-on, clear coat varnish.

How to Make

  • Cut poster board into desired shape. Crumple newpaper into balls. Place balls on top of posterboard and attach with masking tape. Use the tape to create indents for shaping. Tear newspaper or magazines into strips approximately 2 inches by 4 inches.

  • In a bowl combine 2 cups of flour and water until it forms a thick soupy mixture, much like the consistency of tomato soup. Dip newspaper strips one at a time into the flour soup and lightly squeeze off the excess. It will be a little drippy. Drape the wet newspaper over the crumpled news paper and masking tape to form a smooth covering. While wet it will also be slightly moldable to create areas of indentation. Allow it to dry. Repeat on the back. Push in a small hole in the back as a hanging spot. Allow it to dry. Double check for any holes or areas that may need to repeat this process.

  • Once dry, used left over acrylic paint to create a base coat for your project. This will cover up the words from the newspaper. Choose the colors for your finished project and paint. (It will probably take two coats) Air dry.

Take it outside to spray a clear varnish over it one side at a time.

When finished, choose your sight. Place a nail in the wall and mount it by the indented hole you prepared ahead of time in the back.

    Enjoy.

Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your gingerbread house or holiday cookie is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
