Take handiwipes EVERYWHERE. They're great in the car AND in restaurants where the restrooms aren't so great.

With really (and not so very) young children, bring a "security" item from home: a favorite stuffed animal or pillow; something that retains the consistency of home.
For older kids, buy a journal ahead of time...
