Authentic Thanksgiving Writing Thanksgiving is the perfect time for authentic writing for our children. Authentic writing activities help with writing achievement. When children are involved with authentic writing for real life purposes they are writing for people outside of school. Thanksgiving gives your child the authentic writing opportunity to write recipes, shopping lists, greeting cards, writing stories and poems. Have your child be your family's official Thanksgiving writer. Give your child a new journal and colored pencils, as a family sit around your table with mugs of warm apple cider and begin your plans. Your child can: • List who is going to be at your dinner. • Write invitations to invite your guests. • Read recipes and make a list of food needed. • Make Greeting cards for family and friends that are far from home. • Create Place cards for the table. • Write stories, prayers, and poems to be read on Thanksgiving. Learning to write well is one of your child's most challenging tasks. It takes time, practice and lots of encouragement. Parents can help develop these life long skills, and create memories and the love of writing at the same time. Don't forget to take a few pictures to slip into the journal for a lifetime of memories.
