We saw this cake in the Family Fun magazine a few years ago and it has become a "first day of school" tradition ever since. My husband always takes the first day of school off and he is always in charge of the cake.

I also have a reluctant reader/writer and I have to say that I love this idea! The lure of getting something in the mail is irresistible--it's like getting a check in the mail when we're adults!

I love this "chore dice" idea. Our kids are pretty good about not arguing over who has to do which chore but I think that this will add an element of fun--that "spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down" idea!
