I'm not sure I would have been strong enough. Her choice was better than years down the road, the child have emotional, or worse issues, because there have been too many stories of adoptive(or biological) relationships turning abusive, or just plain nonexistant because there is no bond or no feeling, or resentment. The child is now with someone who can provide that emotional bond, something that he will cherish with his Mom and Dad forever.
