What Experts Say

Some toddlers, even though they're agile in other respects, never figure out that they can climb out of their cribs. Others, often before they or their parents are ready to transition them into a bed, realize they can fling their little bodies over the side of their cribs ... and it's time to have a midnight party!

Is it dangerous for my kid to climb out of the crib?

Although climbing out of the crib is not the most dangerous thing your child will ever do, it still can be harmful to the baby so it's a good idea to take some safety measures. First, let your child know that it is not okay to climb out of the crib. By the time they can climb out, they can also understand your rules about climbing out. If they insist, use either a crib tent or big pillows under the crib for safety. However, if they are getting out often, you might be losing the battle so start looking for a big kid bed.

Do those crib tents really work?

A crib tent can be a good way to keep your child in his or her crib. Some are designed with velcro loops that secure to the crib rails at the top, while others have a safety net that surrounds the entire inside of the crib (even under the mattress). Both feature a mesh dome at the top with an opening that can be zipped shut to keep your child inside the crib. The key to using a crib tent is to carefully follow directions and make sure it is installed properly.
