2- and 3-year-olds can and do understand much of what's going on around them. When you are preparing to make a big adjustment from a crib to a "big-kid bed," ongoing dialogue about it will help them prepare for the change. Also let them have some decision power regarding their new bed. Take them to a bedding store to pick out a new bedding set or give them some options and let them choose what they like best. At bedtime, you can let them know you will read three bedtime stories but they can pick them out. This will give them some ownership of their new bed and help ease them into the change without creating anxiety over the new sleeping situation. Try to keep the nighttime routine consistent while they adjust to the new sleeping arrangement.
