Try to avoid sounding like you are reprimanding small kids ... use gentle reminders ... like a pleasant sing song voice ... "Yes, please".  Ultimately manners are just like language, they pick them up based on being around people who use them. We have to use please and thank you's when we are talking to are kids, because they are just as deserving of respect and courtesy as anyone else.
