My story about: Choosing a Daycare

DrMommyKC's story

July 25, 2007

I always knew that I wanted my daughter in daycare by the time she was 1 to 1 1/2 years old to allow her to engage in social learning. I went to daycare as a young child and have such fond memories of interacting with my teachers and my peers there, I felt like I blossomed as a social person.

Since I work full-time, we had a babysitter who watched my daughter in the beginning, but I didn't feel like Jolie was getting the stimulation that she needed after awhile. Sure there were playgroup visits and trips to the library, but I really felt like Jolie was missing out on development.

By the time we started looking for daycare's in earnest (and this was even before we thought Jolie was ready), we discovered that there were waitlists for all the quality daycares and Montessori programs in our area. Sometimes, up to a year or more!

Luckily, we ended up getting off the waitlist for a fabulous Montessori school with everything we were looking for (quality instruction, professional teachers, a clean, safe and fun environment, and a diverse group of families) when Jolie was a couple months shy of her 2nd birthday , but we waited longer than we had hoped for.

Next time, we are getting on waitlists earlier!
