If weightlifting is your thing, it is a great opportunity to use the sport as a way for you and your child to exercise together. If it is something your child wants to do with friends just make sure that there is adult supervision involved. In fact, it might be a good idea for you to be involved in the first few workouts so you can know the safety guidelines involved in weight lifting.  Weight lifting is a great form of physical exercise that does so much for the body. But it must be done correctly. Make sure that your child knows how to use weights properly and that your child is being trained by someone who knows what they are doing.

Keep in mind the terminology is very important.  Weightlifting is a sport.  Trying to lift as much weight as possible for one time is weightlifting.  Strength training is performing a lift for several repetitions, 10-20 generally is recommended for children.  There is such a high level of concentration for weightlifting that the chance of injury outweighs any potential benefit.

Strength training is very beneficial for children, however twice a week for 30-45 minutes is perfect for their attention span.  With the emphasis on technique it will be a very safe experience for the kids.
