My daughter has a lovely friend at school who is smart, sweet, and a great pal to our daughter. The weird part is that her parents completely discourage playdates. They are always too busy or claim they will aim for a date in the future that never materializes. I feel so sorry for this ittle girl as her other friends will be getting closer and closer with each other as she merely gets shuffled off to violin lessons and math tutors. She also does not come to birthday parties, though she dutifully brings a present to school for the birthday child. I suppose this is a free country and parents can choose to withhold friendships from their children as it suits them, but it certainly is a sad thing to watch. Playdates are such a wonderful way to encourage close friendships and to connect a kid to the neighborhood. I can't imagine a childhood without them!
