My story about: Parent-Teacher Conferences

CallMeMama's story

September 26, 2007

We just had our first conference with our son. Before children, I was a fifth-grade teacher. I had sat on the "other side" of the conference table, so I knew all the tricks (lead with a positive, etc.) Once when I was having a difficult conference with a parent about their daughter's learning disability, the mother informed me, "You just don't understand because you aren't a parent!"

She was right. Being on the "parent" side of the parent/teacher conference is hard. You automatically walk in with your guard up, ready to defend your baby if necessary. But parents also forget that the teacher isn't the enemy, just the messenger.

What I loved most the conference that we just had was that it was called a "goal setting" conference. And that's just what we did. The teacher showed us the kindergarten expectations for the year and what he had mastered so far. Then, she talked about things that he still needed to work on and how we could help him at home.

It was very positive and we left feeling great about our son's first school experience. The foundation that were are creating alongside his teacher will make all the difference in his future education.
