dishnermove: Is his change in behavior that's happened suddenly? If so, it could be that the problem with his schoolwork is only tangentially related to the schoolwork, and he's using it as a way to get out of whatever the real problem is. For example, if there's a bully in the class and instead of dealing with the bully he's not doing his homework so he can get out of the gifted class without confronting the bully or telling you about it. Whatever the problem is, in his mind, it's worse for him to tell someone about it than it is to lie and take all the punishment associated with lying (like being suspended from school). It sounds like you've tried everything to be supportive and let him know you're there for him without his responding it. It might be time to bring him to a professional -- a clergyman he trusts or child psychologist for example.
