My story about: "Gifted" Kids

Shaylay518's story

First, to dishnermove, your son could have stopped working because he doesn't see the point in doing it. I know at times myself I stopped seeing the point in defining vocabulary if I already knew the definition, or constantly reviewing multiplication after I had mastered the skill, so maybe it isn't a matter of there being a "problem", maybe the school is assigning busy work that your son finds pointless. Discuss with the teacher how often new material is introduced, and whether students who have mastered old material could be presented new material while others go through review.

I know that getting classified as a gifted student is a bit of a challenging road under some school administrations. My mother was told by the principal of my elementary school "we don't give anyone special treatment." She constantly denied the requests of my teachers to have me tested, and my mom had to fight for two years with the local Board of Education just for testing. All this while she had her own son tested every year and allowed (at least) four boys in my grade be tested. We are of the opinion that the principal didn't enjoy seeing female students succeed for one reason or another (a female, mixed-race cousin was also denied testing by our principal, but my aunt didn't want to fight as far as my mother did).

Motivation in an all-inclusive classroom is hard to find, so be attentive to your child's needs. Often classwork may as well be classified as busywork for them, so don't be surprised when they start "forgetting" to do homework. It's usually a sign that they feel that the work is unnecessary since they've already mastered the material. I, personally, was a natural in mathematics, and would often make reckless mistakes when doing work just because I was sick of doing the same thing and wanted to learn something new. The same goes for all students - particular subjects will usually come naturally, so they will need challenged more often.

Hope I helped answer any q's
