It seems cooties are the beginning of a dance that we are a part of for the rest of our lives. The "I love you, I hate you" syndrome starts with cooties. Think back, and try to be honest with yourself: cooties always seemed to come from one of the boys or girls you were strangely attracted to or were competitive with. Cooties eventually made way for stronger feelings in one direction or the other but it was always real to you. Remember that when your child comes home in tears complaining that someone said they have cooties. They may feel somewhat rejected from someone whom they have special feelings for. It will be hard to try to rationalize with your child because cooties are such an emotional issue so just listen and let them know that they don't really have cooties. If the issue becomes a big concern, perhaps a meeting with your child's teacher could help the situation.
