I think that asking kids to help around the house is always beneficial. It teaches them responsibility and how to care for things (their room, their clothes, their toys, etc.) Chores always has such a negative connotation to me. "Helping out" sounds positive whereas "chore" has a built-in negative "I don't wanna do it" sound.
