More recently, the shootings at Virginia Tech, which occurred in the spring of 2007 around the anniversary of Columbine, reminded us of the impact one individual can have on our feelings of safety. Incidents like these are tragic and contribute to an overall feeling of unsettledness.
While there have been several school shootings in the last 10 years, what's important to remember is that schools are safe places. Although instances of school shootings are highly publicized, they are not common events.
Schools across the country have responded to these incidents...
School Violence
It is a good idea to know how prepared your child's school is to handle school violence. Ask if they have a plan of action and find out what it entails. Some campus' have a police officer on the campus everyday. Others are completely gated with minimal entrances. Also, find out how your school handles threats against the school or students. Do they suspend students or expel them for violent threats? Although it is not the job of your child to be a watchdog, it is important for them to not be afraid to come forth if they hear another student threatening to do something to another student or the school. Keep the dialogue with your child open and let them know they can always talk to you about these important issues.
