What Experts Say

If you're reading this, you're probably not one of the lucky, super-organized few who started a college fund when your child was born. Even if you're only now able to start thinking about it, you've already taken the first step by learning what to do to finance a college or technical education.

Where to Go for Help

Your teen's high school counseling office is a great place to start discussing the options. Counseling departments usually have books, brochures, and binders full of information about all the different kinds of financial aid available to students and their families, and many counseling departments also hold a financial aid workshop in the fall of senior year, when parents are getting started on this process.

Steps to Get from A to Aid

A large amount of paperwork is involved in applying for financial aid, so give yourself plenty of time to tackle it all. A good place to start is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), the federal government's form to apply for financial aid.

Another important step you can take is getting started on your taxes early; you'll want to file your federal income tax as early as possible this year, since financial aid forms ask for a great deal of information from your tax return.
