My story about: Provocative Clothing

ThompsonClanMom's story

September 07, 2007

Out of all my children (4 rugrats, at last count) I always thought of my oldest daughter as the "quiet thinker" and was disturbed by her recent attempts at [gasp] being noticed, especially by [double-gasp] BOYS!

"But, why can't I wear makeup to school?"

I wanted to tell her that it was...well, because I said so...but, I didn't wear makeup until after starting my first full-time job and 8th grade is much TOO young to be wearing the heavy eyeliner and even darker lipstick that some of her friends were sneaking, no doubt.

But, it was the fishnet stockings and mesh fingerless gloves - that her friend was wearing that day - I was worried about.

"Just be aware that you might not like all the attention."

We stopped off at the store to pick up some last minute school supplies - don't you love those? - and the cashier (a boy) started chatting with her and assumed she was a freshman in high school.

It was a one-sided conversation, as my daughter was too shocked to respond, until I intervened.

"She's in 8th grade and I'm her mother, btw."

Later, driving home, she begged me NOT to tell my husband.

"Daddy won't let me date until I'm 21, FOR SURE!"

Later, we continued our discussion about the evening's events and had a nice conversation (read: no screaming was necessary) in our driveway.

"Don't worry - I get it, Mom - I guess I'm just not used to all the attention and maybe not so ready, either."

Neither am I, kids - at least we're talking about it, thanks to the teenage delinquent, behind the counter - and I wonder if there will be a time when WE will be ready...ever.
