What Experts Say

Whether you blame it on celebrities or just general cultural trends, there's no question that girls are dressing in a more sexually provocative way at a younger age than ever before. To deal with the issue, many schools have instituted a dress code that specifies things like minimum skirt length, and some schools have reverted to uniforms.

The controversy leaves parents confused, wondering, well, if it's trendy and all the kids are doing it, what's the problem? That whole look seems modest compared to some of the styles today and while we as parents want our children to explore their identities with fashion choices we also don't want our kids to look like the town trollop. Set her clothing standards according to her age. If she wants to wear thong underwear at 12, and you don't want her to, tell her she can when she is 16 and instead give her cute boy short underwear as an alternative. Also, if the school they go to demands a certain dress code, it's important that you adhere to it as a parent. This will help you fight the battle at home and it will tell your child that authority matters.
