My story about: Over-Scheduling

pixposies's story

July 18, 2007

My ten-year old daughter gets differing opinions about extra-curricular activities from myself and my ex-husband. He likes for her to have every millisecond filled. And I'm much more moderate. It's been very confusing for her.

She would come home from his house and tell me that daddy thought she should sign up for... whatever. "He thinks I can handle it!" Four, five activities a week. I really thought fourth grade would be stressful enough with maybe one or two. So, last year, on top of piano lessons, I let her sign up for whatever she wanted and let her figure it out for herself.

Oh, it was ugly. Half-way through the school year her piano instuctor got extremely upset that there wasn't enough practicing going on. (I know, not an uncommon occurance.) But my daughter imploded. At me. "How could you let me do this? I'm just a kid! I don't have any time to lay around and just do nothing! It's just too much!" I know you all can visualize a ten-year old girl running upstairs, slamming the door and flopping on her bed. And crying hysterically.

She's figured out (through personal experience - yay!) that she needs to find some balance in her life. I'm proud of her that she's learning to pace herself, and to say NO when others are pressuring her into something she knows isn't healthy for her. And she's only ten... I hope it sticks.
