The mother of my 12 year old daughter is very strict, how can I stop that?

How far is too far to keep letting this strictness get in the way? I'm not sure if its me or my wife. The wife is very strict, but I'm very understanding and comprehensive (I think). This morning, the wife started slapping herself in the face in front of my daughter just to let her know how mad she was for not doing her bed. Not sure what this means...please help...
