"How well we prepare ourselves to deal with all types of emergency situations will determine our success in managing them," says Debra Holtzman, a safety expert and author of the "Safe Baby".
Planning ahead will also go a long way to giving you peace of mind that your family can handle anything.
If your child is in daycare or school, make sure the school has occasional fire and disaster drills. Find out where your children go in an emergency and when and how you need to pick them up after an emergency. Also, make sure that someone will stay with your child until a parent or guardian comes to pick them up in the event of an emergency. The school should post the dates that drills occurred in a master calendar available to all parents.
