My sister had given her 11 year old son explicit instructions not to open the door to anyone when she went out for a 20 minute trip to the grocery store. He is a stickler for rules so she felt things would be okay. However, unannounced, Aunt Joan who lives hours away in another state had driven down the coast in her motorcycle for a weekend visit. She arrived at the door and knocked. He called through the locked door that he couldn't open it to anyone.
"But it's me -- your own aunt!" she protested.
No dice. My nephew refused to let her in! All in all, a good thing that he will follow rules regardless of circumstance, but we hope over time he may grow to appreciate the subtle shades of gray that real-life decision making requires!
