With the arrival of my second daughter, my first, Ella, thought she had died and gone to heaven. She had asked for a baby girl and got exactly what she wanted. But boy did that love turn fierce. When Annika was about 4 months old, big sister Ella tried biting her. "I wanted to see if she would cry" was the somewhat understandable explanation. Several months and many bites later we still had a big problem on our hands. Later we pinpointed the time of acceptance: 8 months. At that time, a new level of peace (if you can call it that) revisited our household.
I have never met another parent who went through the transition from one to two children easily. I think it is the nature of the beast, and only love and a lot of patience (and time outs!) can eventually cure the first-born's pain.
