My story about: Asking Why

pixposies's story

July 18, 2007

Both of my girls, 6 and 10, have always asked nonstop questions. At first, I felt compelled to answer everything with a full-blown response. After all, they are trying to learn... and I have the answers! (Or so I would have them believe.) Yes, after a while my brain was no longer my own. There was rarely a time I could think about what I cared about. Forget about trying to find an address or follow directions in the car...

I finally figured out the classic "Why do YOU think that is?" And the fabulous "Well, why not?" Both of these responses made the kids VERY happy. Honestly, they can figure out why the sky is blue(And why don't dogs drive cars? And are they sad about it?)on their own. We've got a computer. And billions of books. And giving them a chance to answer made them think creatively. In fact, most of their own answers were extremely interesting. It's great to get insight into how they think. And it makes them feel heard. Which is what I personally think all that peppering is about. Kids want to feel connected, as well as learn new things.

I still respond to them when I have an actual answer. But I'm always going to love hearing why they think the world works the way it does. They usually understand it better than I do anyway...
